Is it Colic or Infant Reflux?Learn how to tell the differenceIt can sometimes be difficult for you to understand whether your baby has colic or reflux since some of the symptoms (eg. poor sleep, constant crying) can be similar. Symptoms of ColicThe main symptom is continuous crying for long periods of time. This crying can occur at any time of day but it usually gets worse in the evening. Your baby will look uncomfortable or appear to be in pain. They may lift their head or draw their legs up to their abdomen. Symptoms of RefluxYou may find that your baby has trouble swallowing when feeding and may accept only small feeds despite being hungry. In some infants you may see poor weight gain. After feeding you will see the neck arching and they will draw their legs up to their abdomen. Another strong symptom is crying whenever you place baby flat on their back, they find this position very uncomfortable. Your baby will only feel relief by being held or in an up right position. Due to this poor sleep habits are also common. What will help your baby?Wrapping your baby firm and snug in a swaddle not only has a calming effect, it helps relieve colic and reflux attacks. |
