The need to feed outweighs the need to sleepAt this stage, the need to feed outweighs the need to sleep. A paediatrician may recommend feeding your baby every 3 to 4 hours, more often for the smaller or premature babies. Breastfed infants may get hungry more frequently than bottle-fed babies and may need to nurse every 3 hours in the first few weeks. Try to sleep when your baby is sleeping. Breast or Bottle? It is recommended that babies be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months. Following the introduction of solid foods, breastfeeding is encouraged through this first year of life, but each child and situation is different so individual choices need to be taken into consideration.
Breastfeeding may not be possible or preferable for all women. Deciding to breastfeed or bottle-feed a baby is usually based on the mother’s comfort level with breastfeeding and the support that is given to help with correct feeding techniques.
Breastfeeding may not be recommended for some mothers and babies. If you have any questions about whether to breastfeed your child, talk to your pediatrician or talk to a good lactation consultant.
Remember, your baby’s nutritional and emotional needs will be met whether you choose to breastfeed or formula-feed. |
