Jennifer Harper-DeaconQ) I have a six-month-old girl who has sleeping problems. My GP referred her to a paediatrician, who has not found anything clinically wrong. She is restless at night, so I tried a sleeping bag, which improved her sleeping, but she then developed a rash. I am pulling my hair out. What else can I try? Exhausted mother, Guernsey A) You may be comforted to know that most parents experience sleepless nights for the first year of their baby’s life. A baby who wakes frequently disturbs your sleep pattern; babies also pick up on the tension caused by your exhaustion. It sounds as if your daughter had a reaction to the fabric or interlining of her sleeping bag, which was most likely synthetic. As her sleep improved when you used a sleeping bag, I suggest trying the Merino Kids Go Go Bag™ (£57.50; www.merinokids.com). It is made of 100% natural fibres, including soft merino wool from New Zealand and crushed cotton, so it is suitable for children with allergies, eczema or sensitive skin. Merino fibres are breathable, so will help to prevent overheating; during winter, the natural weave of the fibres traps air, providing insulation. An added bonus is a vent that allows for easy transfer from cot to car seat, without having to wake you child. For yourself, I suggest you try the Bach Original Flower Remedy Sweet Chestnut (£5.95 for 20ml, from most chemists). It should help to relieve your despair in these exhausting times.
